Byzantium is a continuing inspiration to us in our design and jewelry work. One of the major symbols of the Byzantium period is the Crescent moon. The city of Byzantium (later known as Constantinople and Istanbul) adopted the crescent moon symbol. According to some reports, they chose it in honor of the goddess Diana. Others indicate that it dates back to a battle in which the Romans defeated the Goths on the first day of a lunar month. Either way, the Crescent moon and all the attending moon symbolism became absorbed into the culture and art of Byzantium.
These earrings are a fine example of Byzantium’s art and design. Ornately inscribed with filigree and roses, the crescent can be seen holding the rose on the bottom of the earring. Upraised points are sometimes used as a sign of masculinity. When combined with moon symbolism, it is the sign of completion. We love these earrings for their ancient symbolism, and for the Byzantine extravagance of style!
